Everything You Need to Know About Dermal Fills

DERMAL FILLER INJECTIONS
Injection of dermal fillers is a frequent, nonsurgical cosmetic procedure occurring every day. In fact it is the second most frequent in the United States. Dermal fillers are often used to smooth wrinkles and make them less noticeable but can also have many other effective uses as well. Dermal fillers can assist in the treatment of volume deficiency from aging. Scars can have diminished appearance when treated with dermal fillers. Dermal fillers can also be used in facial sculpting, facial contouring, and augmentation of specific anatomical sites such as the lips.

IN & OUT, SAME DAY
Injection of a facial filler is generally an outpatient procedure that is done with the use of numbing medication. You may experience some mild discomfort, bruising and swelling for up to a week after the procedure. After the swelling subsides, there may be a need for a touch-up injection for best results. How long the effect lasts depends on individual factors of methods used as well as what is being treated.

VARIETY OF FILLER OPTIONS
There are a multitude of injectable dermal fillers available on the market today. Dermal fillers can include things like hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, fat grafting, permanent soft tissue filler or poly-L-lactic acid.

HYALURONIC ACID INJECTIONS
Hyaluronic Acid is a natural component of the skin’s connective tissue and is the most common filler used for treatment of wrinkles. The results of hyaluronic acid injections typically last six to twelve months. Calcium hydroxylapatite is used to contour the jawline, restore volume in the cheeks, and treat deeper wrinkles and skin folds. The results of calcium hydroxylapatite can last up to a year when used for contouring and three years when used to fill wrinkles.

FAT GRAFTING
Fat grafting is a method in which fat is removed from the lower abdomen or other area through liposuction and injected through small incisions into the cheek, temple, lips or forehead. The effects of fat grafting may be permanent, but achieving the desired results usually requires more than one session as well as overfilling the site because the body reabsorbs some of the fat that is deposited.

PERMANENT SOFT TISSUE FILLER INJECTIONS
Permanent soft tissue filler is used to smooth deep wrinkles around the mouth. The body can’t absorb this type of filler, so it doesn’t require reinjection. Permanent soft tissue filler generally isn’t recommended as a first-time facial filler treatment. Poly-L-lactic acid is used to restore facial volume often lost due to natural aging or illness. Two or three sessions are usually required for poly-l-lactic injections but the effects can last for up to two years.

Due to the varying methods of dermal fillers used the need for professional implementation is evident.
